🌟Happy Tutorial Tuesday🌟. Transitioning from Upward Facing Dog to Downward Facing Dog with Piper.
Try her ‘Upward Facing Planks’ drill to help strengthen your core to avoid pain in the lower back in this transition.
To protect your lower back in this transition in upward facing dog push through the palms. Lift the navel up and in and flatten the lower back. Then lead with the hips into Downward Facing Dog.

Happy Hips Poses
Most of us spend a large portion of our day sitting. Sitting in the car 🚗 or in front of a computer 💻. Doing this for long periods of time can wreak havoc on our hips. The psoas muscle that originates at the lower spine and inserts into the femur (lesser trochanter), is responsible for bringing the knee in towards the chest. Continuously contracting this muscle will causes it to shorten and become tight.
The opposite muscle in the sitting position is the gluteus medius. This muscle becomes underused and stretched adding to our already unstable and unhappy hips.
The above poses help to stretch the overused muscles and turn on the underused muscles. Poses like Lizard pose variations are a great way to stretch the psoas. Goddess pose, Bird-of-Paradise or Hand-to-Toe pose requires you to turn on the glutes medius. This activation helps open the hips, therefore strengthening this underused muscle group.
When trying these poses close you eyes and bring awareness to what muscles you feel are stretching and what muscles you need to activate to feel good in these poses and counter the side effects of sitting all day. 🧘♀️@anastabaker

Chaturanga Dandasana Yoga Drill With Heidi Dickinson 🧘🏻♀️Ever experience pain or discomfort while flowing through your Chaturanga Dandasana? You may be internally rotating your shoulders. If your shoulder blades are ‘winging’ while moving from high to low plank you are not activating your serratus anterior muscles.
Found under the shoulder blade, these muscles connect to your upper side ribs. Activating these muscles by hugging your shoulder blades into your upper back will prevent this ‘winging’ of the shoulder blades and avoiding internal rotation of the shoulders, stabilizing your shoulders. 🧘♀️Shifting forward from high plank to low plank is key to a safer Chaturanga. Without shifting your weight forward your momentum goes down, and your elbows will end up behind your wrists, throwing off your entire weight distribution and potentially irritating /injuring your wrists, elbows, and shoulders. Focus on shifting forward enough so that your elbows align roughly over your wrists once in low plank, working towards a 90 degree angle from shoulder, elbow to wrist. This will keep your shoulders, elbows and wrists safe for many more Chaturangas. 🧘🏻♀️Try this drill using blocks to help keep your elbows above your wrists in your Chaturanga. 🧘🏻♀️📸🎞@jesannayoga
